Mask with crown
Igala people, Nigeria
16.5 inches, painted wood, cloth
A large, well-used mask
painted white, black, and all three primary colors using store-bought
enamel. Part of the crown that looks white is actually aluminum paint.
It looks like several coats have been applied over the years. The Igala
people are the major ethnic group in present Kogi State but can be found
in Delta and Edo States.
It could also be from either of two other Nigerian
groups-- The Urhobo or the Efe. Most importantly, it is an
authentic mask that has not had its bright colors removed or been
antiqued.
