Antelope mask Kurumba people, Burkina Fasso, West Africa 38 inches, painted wood These were worn by the Nonose Society at the end of mourning, in order to drive away the spirit of the deceased, which could harm the living. The same mask was also worn at agricultural festivities and by dancers acting out the role of mythical teachers who came from heaven. The headdress represents Yirige, the culture hero, who drove away evil spirits at the first tilling of the land. This classic mask style is quite popular with collectors, despite the large size. Ours has been repaired and has a fresh coat of paint. Made for sale.
