Chikunza mask Chokwe people, Angola/Zambia 44 inches, paint, resin, fabric, wood, rope A large, rigid circumcision mask that fits over the head. Very handsome, and strong enough to be danced time and time again. It is made of heavy, mealie bag cloth from the bags in which dry mush is sold, which is stretched over a wooden frame. Perfect condition. It is probably the most distinctive of the many makishi masks used by Chokwe people. The makishis all represent ancestor spirits and are associated with human fertility, abundance of natural resources and prosperity. This mask performs at male initiation ceremonies on behalf of the initiates and the village that hosts the initiation. Because of its large size, you seldom see them on the market. The book "Chokwe" edited by Manuel Jordan shows two Chikunza masks.
