Pwevo mask
Lwena people, Angola
11 inches, stained wood
The culture of the Lwena is similar to that of the Chowke. This mask is
probably an equivalent of the Pwo and would evoke a female ancestor who
watches over the fertility of future generations. The scarification
marks are the same as those used by the Chokwe, however the finish is
dull and lacks the rich patina we associate with Chokwe masks. Treatment
of the hairdo is also different.
Old, used, and quite authentic-- this is a real find. I have additional
photos, if you wish to see more. And please remember that you can return
it for a refund if you don’t agree with my assessment.
