Entertainers mask
Southern Dan people, Ivory Coast
9.3 inches, stained wood
Called a Takangle or Entertainers mask, pieces like this are also used
for non-dance purposes. This particular mask has no holes for
attachments, so it would have been hand-held or used for display in the
house. The angular style of the carving is a bit unusual, and I find it
quite attractive. The vertical welt on the forehead is a characteristic
feature of all works created by carvers associated with the We, and some
of the Bete.
