Yoruba people, Nigeria 1l.3 inches, painted wood This is an Efe-Gelede mask, though this sort is frequently mistaken for an Erin Egungun mask (Elephant Egungun) - one which also has large ears, though ears of a different sort. Efe-Gelede dance is performed at night while Gelede is a daytime festival. Efe masks are more uniformly masculine. The Gelede ceremonies celebrate the contributions of senior women in Yoruba culture and also as a defense against sorcery. http://carlos.emory.edu/COLLECTION/AFRICA/africa03.html $400
