Igbo people, Eastern Nigeria 13.5 inches, painted wood Representing the spirit of a young girl, it originated from the heart of Igbo country. Such masks are worn by young men during harvest celebrations and the ceremonies held annually in honor of the earth spirit. With its bright enamel colors and lack of antiquing this mask is the kind that would be used for dances nowadays-- not something made for the market. A little wear is evident on the front, however the rear looks clean. Hard to say if it was actually used.
