Luchazi art is closely related to that of the Chokwe. Pwo represents a mythical female personage who died young. Pwo is the ideal in young female beauty. This mask is danced by young male initiates on their return to the village and other important occasions to encourage fertility and prosperity to the village. Probably made for market, this is none the less a beautifully crafted little mask.
