Mandingo people, Guinea 13 inches, painted wood, raffia This mask was collected in Guinea, West Africa, by a friend whom attended a funeral in his childhood village, according to my source. The wooden painted mask was worn during festivals and ceremonies in the village of TIGUIBIRI , outside of SIGIRI, and was used for entertainment purposes. It is a genuine, contemporary mask used in a traditional manner. Mandingo speak the Mandinka language and this large ethnic group can be found in other countries on the extreme West coast as well as Mali and Burkina Fasso.
