Kifwebe Mask Songye people, Congo 20 inches, wood painted in black, red and white Kifwebe masks are the product of the secret society of the same name, and are among the most extraordinary in Africa. An important feature of the Kifwebe mask is the ridging on its surface. This is a male Kifwebe. Aggressively formed with bulging eyes, projecting mouths and powerful crests, male masks are easy to recognize from their smoother, more graceful female counterparts. Used for social control, political action, or the solicitation of contributions and protection, they were danced at important functions. This particular example is large, complex, and perfectly represents the classic form. It is new and has been carefully carved and painted. No artificially aging. Rarely do we see a full-size Kifwebe this well rendered. ..or with no attempt to make it look old and used.
