Male mask Sukuma people, Tanzania 11.5 inches, wood, bamboo teeth This is a very typical face mask from the Sukuma people, with a primitive folk-art look that is easily recognizable. Although the exact age is unknown, it appears to be a used piece worthy of any serious collection. I think it would have been used in harvest rites or perhaps belonged to music and dance groups that were popular among the Sukuma from the colonial period to the 1950s, and who vied for the audience’s favor with entertaining performances.
