Made by I. Ketut Berati, master carver. This is a top level mask suitable for a professional dancer. Masks of this caliber are seldom offered for sale. They are incredibly well carved and finished with many coats of paint and great attention to detail. In my opinion, only the finest Noh masks can rival them in quality.

On page 30 of Judy Slattum’s Masks of Bali Topeng Tua is described as an introductory character who may reemerge later in the drama as the Senior Minister, Wise Elder Statesman, or the King in Retirement. The mask photographed in the book was carved by I. Wayan Tangguh and is different, but not superior.
