Haitian Tiger mask

Carnival, Haiti

13.5 inches, painted papier mache

Papier mache animal masks are worn, along with brightly colored costumes, in celebration of the pre-Lenten Carnival in many Haitian cities. French planters introduced the festival to the island in the 18th century. The African slaves who worked in the sugar cane fields and factories then added their music and dance traditions to create a rich Creole experience. This particular mask is illustrated in the book "Masks from Around the World."
