Caribbean Lechones mask Santiago, Dominican Republic 13 inches, painted papier mache The devils in Santiago are called "Lechones". They are the local conception of monsters that appear wherever pre-Lent pagan celebrations occur. This carnival tradition dates back to the 1800’s when Dominicans started to assume their own identity as a nation. There are two basic types of devil masks: La Joya, that feature thorny horns around the main horns; and Los Pepines that appear with smooth horns and a wider beak or snout. They represent two competing neighborhoods that at one time used to stage mock fights at which the devils cracked whips to impress bystanders of their ferocity. This one is a Los Pepines.
