Caribbean Vejigante Mask Carnival, Ponce, Puerto Rico 28 inches, painted papier mache The Carnaval de Ponce (Ponce is a town in the south of Puerto Rico) features a playful vejigante who likes to do tricks to the attendees, especially children. This mask is a truly stunning example of the best Puerto Rican craftsmen have to offer. It was purchased in a local shop in 1988 and is signed and dated by the artist. It is hand made and hand painted in vibrant blues, yellows, reds and whites on a background of black. Despite the many horns and pointed teeth, the mask is remarkably sturdy and is in excellent condition. It is a full-size example of the famous Vejigante, measuring roughly 18" wide, 28" high, and 12" deep at the longest points. Very dramatic, and seldom obtainable outside Puerto Rico! SOLD
