Caribbean Vejigante Mask Carnival, Ponce, Puerto Rico 27 inches, painted papier mache Made by Miguel Caraballo, a well-know mask maker in Ponce. He is pictured below. Vejigante masks are worn in the carnival celebrated the second week of February. The style of the large papier mache masks of Ponce always includes big horns, long mouth and animal forms, although they can also be fairly abstract. In addition to being very well crafted, these are among the most wildly artistic masks in the world. Few of these full-sized versions can be found outside of Puerto Rico. This one’s in perfect condition. Illustrated in the book "Masks from Around the World."
