Monkey Mask Chichicastenango, Guatemala 8.5 inches, painted wood, glass eyes Gary Collison purchased this mask from the grandson of the proprietor of a well documented Moraria, or mask rental business in Chichicastenango. It appears to be an old, well carved and heavily used mask. The Monkey is an important character in the Deer dance, simultaneously clowning and policing the crowd. Old and used, this is one of the nicest monkey masks I have seen. There is a carved Y-shaped ridge forming the eyebrows and running to the nose that is hard to appreciate in the photo, plus many coats of paint and a fine patina.
