Yellow Cat Mask Suchitlán, Colima 13 Inches, carved wood with paint Carved by Herminio Candelario, his work has been documented in the book by Lechuga and Sayer, Mask Arts of Mexico p.63, and in fact a mask by this carver is on the cover of the book. He is also one of the five carvers honored in Great Masters of Mexican Folk Art, pages 242-3. This mask was collected directly from the carver by Dinah Gaston. It has been lightly used. In the dance of the Morenos/ Dance of Los Animales, animal pairs distract the Roman soldiers guarding the tomb of Jesus, after his body had been taken down from the cross, so that his body can be removed from the tomb, a preamble to the Resurrection. sold
