Deer Diablo Mask Cuerámaro, State of Guanajuato 15 inches, carved wood with paint, goat horns and leather ears This mask is of the classic style seen in the Pastorela (shepherd’s play) dances in the state of Guanajuato, with horns, a long snout, and carved on the masks are snakes and lizards. As is less commonly the case, the back of this mask has been painted, perhaps to better preserve it. Despite the paint, there is typical discoloration of the wood on the sides of the back edge, corresponding to contact with the wearer’s temples. I held this mask against my face and noted that it is very comfortably carved, I could see well through the carved vision slits but the grain of the wood has been raised in the area under the wearer’s chin, apparently by moisture. Most importantly, the design is striking. In the Pastorela dance, shepherds travel towards Bethleham to see the newborn Christ child, accompanied by their spiritual mentor, the Hermitaño. They sing lovely Mexican carols. Seven Diablos, representing the seven deadly sins, attempt to dissuade or prevent their journey, but the archangel, San Miguel intervenes to guarantee them safe passage. SOLD
