Moro Chino Mask Tlahuapa, Guerrero 8 inches, painted wood In the state of Guerrero, there is a type of Moor mask where the eyebrows and mustache are carved in a stylized manner, as rectangular bars. Such masks are called Moro Chinos. These masks are used in the Moros y Christianos Dance. Usually the Moro Chino masks are painted red. This mask was originally red and has been repainted white. Furthermore, the old label on this mask gives it’s name as Chareo/ Moro. This actually explains the change in color, it has been converted from a Moro Chino to an Archareo/Chareo, or archer. The Archareos dance is simply another variation of the Moors and Christians dance, and in that version the Christians wear white masks and the Moors wear red masks. Though it lacks finesse, this used mask has an interesting history. $185
