Viejo Mask Costa Chica of Guerrero, Mexico 6 inches, painted wood Probably used for the Pescadors Dance, this was purchased from a reputable dealer as a mask from Pinotepa Nacional, Oaxaca. The carving style of the back of the mask does make one think of that area, but the style is Guerrero. The features are vividly carved, the back shows reasonable wear. In my view, this is a mask that was danced in Guerrero, but it may have been carved in the neighboring Mixtec area of Oaxaca. Or it could be an Oaxacan mask by a carver that I have never previously encountered. Quite a a nice mask despite its ambiguity. $250
