King Mask San Martin de Flores, Jalisco 9 Inches, fired clay, paint Made by Juan Esquival Parra, and reportedly danced for 15 years in Carnaval. This Rey (King) mask is well made, and in excellent condition. It was collected from the maker by Dinah Gaston in around 2001. I know of no published information about this mask or town, but similar pottery masks are danced in Santa Fe de la Laguna, Michoacan. They do not appear to be by the same hand. See Máscaras Purépechas Catálogo 2002, pp. 18-9. Juan Esquival Parra, is a talented, older maskmaker who has become a very accomplished ceramicist. His heavy, clay masks are often used for the dance, which is quite unusual. Carved wood and papier mache are much more common materials for Mexican masks. $295
