Fea Mask Santa María Huazolotitlén, Oaxaca 6 Inches, painted wood This danced mask was carved by “Che” Luna, of Huazolotitlan, Oaxaca, for use in the neighboring town of Pinotepa de Don Luis. Tejorones are male dancers wearing small pink faces and conical plumed headdresses. Accompanied by a female dancer- Maria Candelaria, who also wears a small pink-faced mask, and Diablos with horned masks who drink too much, they all join in to hunt a jaguar, womanize and otherwise behave badly to the amusement of onlookers. Women who consort with such rough characters are generically called feas (female uglies), women who behave badly, against the standard of normal female behavior. In a state of feigned or actual intoxication, these “females” even mimic copulation. In contrast, Maria Candelaria models upright female behavior. Such characters dance at Carnaval. SOLD
