Child’s Dog Mask San Juan Colorado, Oaxaca 5 inches, painted wood In the Mixtec town of San Juan Colorado Oaxaca, some of the Tejorones are red faced farmers who with their livestock are menaced by a jaguar, they must hunt and kill the marauder, assisted by a hunting dog, in the process they drink too much and behave badly, behavior that is often the subject of dances during the period of Carnaval. In San Juan there is a tradition of carving smaller versions of the masks worn in the Tigre (Jaguar Hunt) skit to be worn by children. This one appears to have been danced. In the Tigre Dance, the dog character injects considerable comedy by barking hysterically at the Jaguar character, after the Jaguar has been driven up a tree. The meaning of the name Tejorones has apparently been lost, although Tejone refers to a wild animal and Tejonero to a hunter. There are a number of different dances, varying from one town to the next, that are all included under the category of Terjorones. sold
