Jaguar or Tigre Mask

Pinotepa de Don Luis, Oaxaca

13 inches, painted wood

Tigre is a rural Mexican word for Jaguar. During Carnaval, the Tigre figures stand on the shoulders of other dancers and essentially joust with one another. These animal dancers probably also participate in the usual Jaguar hunt skit, although I have never seen this, when I have repeatedly gone to Don Luis for Carnaval.

This mask may or may not have been danced; one would like to see string holes on the sides, to tie it on the dancer’s head, but these are lacking.. In its design it is an absolutely classical example of the Jaguar design used in Don Luis. In the past this mask split in two and was carefully glued back together by Gary Collison and the writer, about five years ago. I am pleased to report that the repair looks pretty good still.
