Animal Pascola mask Vicam, Sonora 8 inches, painted wood, cow tail hair. Undanced. This mask was collected from the Yoeme/Yaqui carver, Antonio Bacasewa, in April, 1987. Often his masks take the form of a human, goat, dog, pig or even a cow. This one may be a blend. Antonio’s mask were always well-carved, front and back, so that there was never any question whether his masks could be used by a traditional dancer. The same masks could be danced or collected, as indeed they were. This mask has such a nicely carved tongue, it is really sublime, and by itself demonstrates Antonio’s talent as a carver. I look upon Antonio as one of a handful of 20 th century Yoeme/Yaqui master carvers. More on Pascola masks.sold
