Santiaguero or Moro mask Sierra de Puebla, State of Puebla, Mexico 7 ˝ Inches, painted wood. As in this example, one sometimes sees an expression of dread on a Moor mask, reflecting the characters’ fate, to be defeated by Santiago and the Christians. A mouth like the one on this mask is almost invariably indicative of a Moor. This mask was not carefully finished to be an artistic masterpiece, but rather to boldly display a dance character, from a distance. Yet the artistry of this mask is embedded in the carving in a palpable way. This mask has been used repeatedly. SOLD
