Moro Mask State of Veracruz 7 inches, painted wood This mask, with pink face and painted sideburns is an extremely typical Moor mask from the Dance of the Moros y Christianos in Veracruz. A nice detail in the design is that the eye complex ( the relief-carved eye and the vision slit above it) is treated as an entity, the oval shape is artfully divided between the two elements. This artistic touch comes as a surprise in an otherwise very simple design. Having had extensive use, this old mask has sustained some damage. The paint around the mustache has flaked, and there is a small amount of damage to the back edge from an old insect infestation. This has died out long ago, and the mask appears to be sound overall.
