Moor Mask Xico, State of Veracruz 7 inches, Carved wood with paint Carved by Antonio Vazquez for the Dance of the Moros y Christianos. Obviously the feature that distinguishes these Xico masks is the dramatic painting, and the inventive design that sets apart the colored areas. They are truly unique among all Mexican masks. As is often the case for Moor masks, the mouth seems to indicate fear or dread, signifying the fact that the character is destined to be defeated by Santiago. In this case, the mouth is wonderfully shaped, and although simply carved, expresses much feeling. The mask shows evidence of mild wear. sold
