Folk mask Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany 8.5 inches, painted wood A very traditional mask with the carved signature, location, date & mark: JOS ERHARDT / PARTEN KIRCHEN / 1937. Mark is possibly a stalk of wheat. There are two strap holes just below eye level on each side and one on the forehead. Expertly carved from a single piece of wood, this finely crafted mask retains its wonderful original paint and patina. Multiple worm holes are visible on reverse and a few on the front. An old repair was obviously made to a split running through the string hole on the left side of the mask (see close-up of signature on rear) and there are a few small cracks, chips and dents. Otherwise, condition is good for a 70 year-old mask from the mountains of Germany. SOLD
