Roitschaeggaetae mask Loetsch Valley, Wallis Canton, Switzerland 19 inches, wood, hair Young men would wear these masks, which they carved themselves, and dress in furs covered with a mixture of soot, blood and manure. Then they would chase frightened villagers. It is also called a Shrovetide mask. This is a well carved example of the typical large, heavy mask (5 1/2 lbs). Full-sized masks like this one are occasionally sold as souvenirs, but the smaller ones are easier to find. This particular one is probably late 20th century.
