Pedro Alvarado Guatemalan costume Dance of the Conquest, Guatemala Embroidered jacket, trousers, cape and hat Several dance dramas are performed in rural Guatemala, the most popular of which is The Dance of the Conquest. Based on the Spanish conquest of the Mayan Empire in 1524, this dance drama reenacts how General Pedro Alvarado and his men were dispatched by Cortes from the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan to conquer the Maya. The Mayan chief, Tecun Uman, fought bravely along side his men, but they were defeated by the Spanish. At one point in the battle, Tecun Uman is able to kill Alvarado’s horse and mistakenly believes that the General will die also. Large photo and top photo show the cape.
