Deer Mask

Chichicastenango, Guatemala

11 inches (not including horns), painted wood, buttons

This charming vintage dance mask from the highlands of Guatemala represents a deer from the "Baile de los Venados." It has aluminum painted deer horns made out of tree branches. Black plastic eyes are framed by white circles highlighting the deer’s look. Upper carved teeth and a big red tongue adorn the black painted snout.  Deer masks are worn on top of the head instead of covering the face. A chunk of wood on the right side of the head broke off and has been crudely repaired as you can see in the top photo.
