Maximon mask Guatemala 6 inches, painted wood with green glass eyes Almost all Maximon masks are part of a seated figure that is the focal point of an alter in a home or chapel. Maximon, also called San Simon, is always dressed in real clothing and frequently has a real cigar in his mouth. Some Maximon masks have been converted from dance masks. This one has eye holes above the glass eyes, but seems a little small to have been used for dancing. Rather, it appears to be a religious icon. There are burns around the mouth, as well as stains below the mouth on the rear, both common signs of ritual usage. $275
