Fraternal Ceremony mask International Order of Odd Fellows, USA 11 inches, painted screen, braided hair The Odd Fellows Lodge is famous for using masquerade in their secret ceremonies. The costumes are quite colorful and the masks are usually made of painted screen with attached hair and beard. Many are home-made, though this one is not. As the fraternal organizations became more established in the early 20th century, costume companies began manufacturing masks and other items for them. This mask, probably a Chinaman, is especially desirable because it is professionally made. There are some breaks in the edges and his nose is pushed in a little but overall it is in good condition, considering its age. Probably manufactured by DeMoulin Bros & Co of Greenville, Illinois in the early 20th century.
