Mahakala mask Buddhist ceremonies, Bhutan 14 inches, papier mache This is an unpainted and unused mask of the type made for actual use in performance. As is typical of masks made in Bhutan, it is large and formed of strong papier mache and composite, rather than carved out of wood. The absence of bright colors draws emphasis to the striking form of this outstanding piece. Whether it is to protect village crops from hailstone damage or the victory of Padmasambhava over malignant deities, the Mahakala character is ever present in ceremonies throughout the Himalayan region. His third eye expresses the wisdom of omniscience. The five skulls signify victory over the five emotional obscurations. SOLD
