Nepal King Shiva mask Rajbansi people, Terai region, Southern Nepal 19 inches, painted wood The Shiva mask is still part of an ongoing tradition in the Terai, although now, with the Chinese occupation, it would not be danced in public. The dramas were staged at festivals such as Shivaratri, Diwali, and harvest time. They consist of stories from the particular village’s history, along with the traditional tales from the Mahabharata, Ramayana and other Hindu myths. This particular mask is illustrated in the book, "Masks from Around the World." SOLD
