Pig mask
Rajbansi people, Terai,
Nepal
12.5 inches, painted wood
The Rajbansi live in a
region called the Terai which is in southwest Nepal near or around the
Indian border. Half of their land was annexed to India and half to
Nepal. Their masks are usually painted with large features and the wood
is heavy.
This mask may belong to the
Ramaya theater. The Ramayana is a very old saga originated from India
with many versions, which can be found all through Asia, Thailand,
Cambodia, Malaysia, and Indonesia. At a time when most of the people had
no education, these shows were the best way to deliver religious and
philosophic messages.
