Drama Mask
Varanasi, Benares, India
21 inches (26 with beard), textiles
There is a photo of the
fully costumed actor portraying King Ravana on page 56 of Musee du
Carnaval it du Masque by Michel Revelard. Located in Binche, France,
the museum houses the best collection of masks and costumes in the
world. This particular mask is so beautiful that they chose a close-up
of it for the front of the book's jacket.
A fine red hood holds the
mask in place. It is large, yet lavished with patterns made up of
luxurious threads, fibers and other materials. The workmanship is
incredible. A character from the Ramlila drama, the forehead mark shows
that he is a follower of Ram and the beard makes it likely that he is
either Sage Vishvamitra or Sage Vashist as he doesn’t have a crown, so
he isn’t one of the kings or young heros. Ramlila
means the divine play of Ram. Ramayana is the story of Ram. It is
presented during the festival season between Dussehra and
Diwali.
