Demon masks like this one are used by the Newar people of the Kathmandu Valley for cult ceremonies where a god takes possession of the dancer chosen to represent him. Newar masks are sometimes made of metal. A thick roll of cloth stitched around the rear circumference is commonly used for comfort from the hard metal surface. An authentic piece well worn from ritual service. Purchased from Dr. Reinhardt Kapeller, an Austrian dealer of Himalayan art.
