Tlaxcala, Mexico 8.5 inches, painted wood, glass These masks are sometimes called Catrins, or Dandies, and are greatly admired for their realistic features and skin tones, glass eyes with false eyelashes, and overall high quality. They portray wealthy Europeans and are the subject of ridicule at Carnival time. The eyes are made of glass (one is broken), the paint for the pupils is faded, some of the eye lashes are missing, there is a damaged place on the tip of his nose, and a 1 1/2" crack on the side edge. Old and very well carved.
