San Bartolo Tutotepec, Hidalgo 28 inches, painted wood, horns, hair, ribbons, ornaments The wooden mask itself is just 6.5 inches high and carved from walnut or some similar hardwood. You can see a very similar mask on page 29 of Mauldin’s Masks of Mexico. Used for Carnival, the leering, crooked-nosed type is one of the most distinctive Chivo styles of rural Mexico. This one is complete with its original horns, beard and ornamentation.
