Hauzolotitlan, Oaxaca 12 inches, painted wood, heavy rubber ears Used in the dance of the Tejorones, this mask may have been made by Jose Luna in the coastal Mixtec village of Hauzolotitlan. He is a very gifted carver who’s forms and colors are always quite inventive. You can see two of his famous animal masks on page 54 of "Mask Arts of Mexico." It was once broken in half and has been firmly glued back together. The ends of the horns have been sawed off, which is sometimes done with domestic livestock.
