San Juan Nuevo, Michoacan 7 inches, painted wood Curpites are associated with the famous Maringuillas and Viejos of Michoacan. Little Mary and Joseph are the leaders and the Curpites are the dance group under them. Dressed in smocks with capes, they leap around and act boisterous in the patios of the townspeople. Curpites with mustaches are usually from San Juan Nuevo. My source said the mask dates back to the early 20th century which I’m inclined to believe because of the very old, cracked, painted surface. The rear shows signs of use, especially where the mask contacted the dancer’s skin.
