Malinche mask

Mexico

8 inches, painted wood

Malinche was the Indian translator for Cortez, and at some point they were married. Mexicans have mixed feelings about this, but she does turn up as a character in several dances. This female mask could also portray a Borracha (drunken woman). The mouth opening on this mask is big enough for a cigarette. Use of the cigarette is inappropriate behavior for a woman in the rural Mexican culture.
