Mexican Negrito mask Guerrero, Mexico 15 inches long, painted wood In certain parts of Mexico African slaves were imported, and though they were just a small minority, blacks are depicted in many village dances. Mexican carvers indicate African decent with black paint and other facial characteristics. This one is unusual both because of its size and the strange (almost hydrocephalic) shape of its head. It appears to have been used-- probably in a Pescador or Tlacolalero dance. The former owner was the first Curator at the Colby College Art Museum in Waterville, Maine, in the early 1970’s. Later he became an antiques dealer. He said this was purchased from a shop that specialized in masks, located in Cuernavaca, on a Mexican vacation in 1981. sold
