Masks of Mexico and Guatemala

Pig mask

Ocozocuautla, Chiapas

11 inches long, painted wood

Made to be worn on the dancer’s back in the Mahoma de Cochi Dance. Sometimes a cob of corn is inserted into the mouth of the pig mask. Many different animal masks are used at Carnaval time around the country, whether they are native to Mexico (jaguars, alligators, birds) or were introduced by the Spaniards after the conquest (horses, cows, pigs). This is a large, heavy mask.
