Huazolotitlan, Oaxaca (coastal region), Mexico 7.5 inches long, painted wood Masks from the Zapotec area are often highly stylized or exaggerated in a humorous sort of way. Our not-so-pretty pink lady is used for the Mascaritas dance, a type of Tejorones dance. In it Viejas and Viejos function as clowns. This Vieja is probably a woman of the night who would display whorish behavior at the dance, to great comic effect.
