Suchitlan, Colima 10.5 inches, painted wood An especially good example from the great carver Herminio Candelario Dolores who is famous for his masks used in the Dance of the Morenos where pairs of animals dance to distract the Roman Centurions who are guarding Christ’s tomb. In addition to coyotes, he makes bulls, burros, goats, roosters, owls and other birds, all of which are imaginative and very colorful. See pages 242-3 in Great Masters of Mexican Folk Art, and page 63 of Mask Arts of Mexico by Lechuga & Sayer. Candelario is Colima's most famous carver.
