Rodriguez mask Decorative, Guerrero 22 inches, painted wood The "Rodriguez" masks are probably the most infamous masks of Mexico. Donald Cordry in his 1980 book "Mexican Masks" introduces Jose Rodriguez as a great old master of Mexican masks. Ten years later in Janet Esser "Behind the Mask in Mexico" we learn it was all a hoax-- that these masks were recently made by a Guerrero carver who specialized in fakes. Real or fake, this is a tour de force of intricate design and carving skill... with a good story to go along with it. The mask is a large and very impressive example of skillful wood carving. Even though part of the upper-left antler is missing, the structure is solid and firm.
